Respiratory physiotherapy at CARE
Shortness of breath, respiratory fatigue, or chronic coughing can limit your mobility, leisure activities, and even the simplest everyday tasks. Respiratory physiotherapy aims to help you breathe better, regain confidence in your breathing, and improve your quality of life.
Why do respiratory physiotherapy?
Do you feel short of breath when walking, climbing stairs, or performing simple tasks? Do you cough frequently or feel like you can't clear your throat properly? Do you feel tired, anxious, or limited by your breathing?
Respiratory physiotherapy is a specialized approach that helps you better understand how your respiratory system works, reduces symptoms, and restores your comfort level in everyday life.
We provide support to people suffering from:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Chronic or restrictive breathing difficulties
- Pneumonia or complications from respiratory infections
- Asthma
- Post-COVID symptoms (persistent shortness of breath, fatigue, decreased endurance)
- Natural decrease in breathing capacity due to age or a sedentary lifestyle
Every situation is different, and each case is handled on an individual basis.
What are the benefits of respiratory physiotherapy?
The positive effects are felt gradually, session after session. Specifically, respiratory physiotherapy allows you to:
- Reducing shortness of breath during daily activities
- Breathe more efficiently, with less effort and less fatigue
- Reduce feelings of tightness and anxiety related to shortness of breath
- Regain more independence and confidence in your physical abilities
- Improve your exercise tolerance and endurance
- Prevent exacerbations and reduce the risk of hospitalization
- Regain better overall physical and psychological comfort in life
The goal is not only to improve your breathing, but also to enable you to live more peacefully and actively.

What does respiratory physiotherapy involve?
Treatment is based on gentle, effective, and scientifically recognized techniques, always explained clearly and adapted to your abilities.
It includes, in particular:
Clearing the airways
We mainly use manual and respiratory techniques to clear congestion, such as EFA (expiratory flow acceleration), ELTGOL, and autogenous drainage. These techniques help to mobilize and remove secretions that block the bronchi, thereby facilitating breathing and reducing coughing.
Devices to assist with decluttering (Flutter, Acapella, Aerobika, etc.) can also be used as a supplement. For hygiene reasons, these tools are the responsibility of the patient. My role is primarily to educate you precisely on how to use them, so that you can use them independently, effectively, and safely at home.
Respiratory rehabilitation
Targeted work on the diaphragm, respiratory coordination, and breath control helps optimize your ventilation and reduce feelings of breathlessness.
Gradual resumption of movement
A personalized exercise program is put in place to improve your endurance, strength, and mobility, always at your own pace and in complete safety.
Active prevention
You will learn simple techniques and practical strategies to maintain your independence, recognize warning signs, and better manage your breathing on a daily basis.
Managing stress and anxiety
Relaxation and breathing techniques can help you cope better with episodes of breathlessness and reduce the emotional impact of the disease.

What happens during a session at CARE Charmilles?
The first session is primarily a time for listening, discussion, and understanding. In a caring and reassuring environment, we take the time to learn about your background, your difficulties, your expectations, and your goals.
A comprehensive assessment is carried out using simple, non-invasive tests to analyze your breathing, physical capacity, and exercise tolerance. This step allows us to define a precise treatment plan tailored to your situation.
A personalized treatment program is then developed. Throughout your follow-up, we provide you with clear, informative, and compassionate support to help you improve your breathing in the long term, gain independence, and enjoy a better quality of life.
Please note: In order for your basic insurance to cover your sessions, your first session must take place within 5 weeks of your physiotherapy voucher being issued. Moreover, the voucher is no longer valid after 3 months, so your appointments must be made within this period.
