What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the most widely used methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves stimulating specific points on the body using fine, sterile, single-use needles.
According to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, these points are located on meridians through which vital energy, known as Qi, flows. When this flow is harmonious, the body has greater physical and functional capacity. When it is disrupted, pain, tension, digestive problems, fatigue, stress, or imbalances may arise.
Acupuncture aims to support the body’s natural self-regulating abilities, promote the flow of energy and blood, and help restore balance.

When should you seek medical advice?
Acupuncture may be recommended in many situations, including to help with:
- musculoskeletal pain: lower back pain, neck pain, sciatica, shoulder pain, knee pain, tendonitis, sprains;
- muscle tension and chronic pain;
- migraines, headaches, and certain types of facial pain;
- stress, fatigue, sleep disorders, or feelings of being overwhelmed;
- digestive problems: slow digestion, digestive discomfort, stomach pain;
- gynecological issues: menstrual pain, support during certain hormonal changes;
- certain ENT conditions , such as allergic rhinitis;
- post-operative care, particularly in cases of post-operative pain or functional recovery.
The therapist assesses the situation during the first session and tailors the treatment to each patient's needs.

A complementary approach to rehabilitation
At CARE Belle-Terre, acupuncture can complement the treatments provided by our physical therapy, occupational therapy, and hydrotherapy teams.
It can be used to aid recovery, relieve certain types of pain, reduce tension, improve sleep, support digestion, or help patients regain a better overall sense of balance.
This complementary approach allows us to offer a more comprehensive view of care: functional, physical, and preventive.
What happens during an acupuncture session?
Each session begins with a discussion with the therapist to understand your symptoms, medical history, overall health, and goals.
The therapist then identifies the points to be stimulated and inserts thin needles into specific areas of the body. The patient then rests for about 30 minutes in a quiet, comfortable environment.
Depending on the patient’s needs, the therapist may also recommend complementary approaches based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as cupping, auriculotherapy, kinesiology taping, herbal medicine, or lifestyle advice.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture is generally very well tolerated. The needles used are very fine, sterile, and single-use. The sensation experienced varies depending on the area being treated and each person’s sensitivity, but it is usually mild and brief.
The goal is to provide gentle, safe care tailored to each patient.

Certified therapists and insurance coverage
Acupuncture treatments may be partially covered by supplemental insurance plans for alternative medicine, depending on your policy. We recommend that you check directly with your supplemental insurance provider to confirm the coverage details.
