Gynecological physiotherapy: perineal rehabilitation
Why gynaecological physiotherapy?
Do you suffer from urinary incontinence? Do you suffer from pelvic pain? Are you postpartum and looking for perineal rehabilitation?
Gynecological physiotherapy helps tostrengthen pelvic muscles, improve posture and promote functional recovery. It also offers important support to women in the prevention and management of health problems specific to the gynaecological sphere, improving their overall quality of life.
What is gynecological physiotherapy?
Gynecological physiotherapy is more commonly known as pelvic-perineal physiotherapy or urogynecological physiotherapy. Its role is to work the pelvic floor muscles to improve feminine comfort throughout a woman's life. Our day-to-day activities put a lot of pressure on the perineum, which can lead to leakage of urine or faeces, organ descent, etc.
Perineal reeducation aims to strengthen the perineal muscle to prevent and limit problems associated with childbirth or simply with age and hormonal changes in women.
The evolution of techniques in recent years has enabled us to improve our practice with a view to better rehabilitation.
What are the benefits of gynaecological physiotherapy?
The benefits of pelvic-perineal physiotherapy are to improve our patients' quality of life by functionally and actively optimizing their perineal muscular capacity to treat, stabilize or prevent a situation.
How is a patient treated for gynecological rehabilitation?
The first session lasts between 45min and 1h.
Before starting the session, the patient signs a document that informs her of the course of the sessions and the different techniques that can be used during the session.
The patient is also informed that she has the right to refuse unwanted techniques.
During this session, the physiotherapist and patient begin by discussing the context and the problem. The physiotherapist then gives a detailed, visual explanation (using diagrams) of the perineum and its role, to help the patient better understand the issues at stake and the benefits of therapy.
The physiotherapist then observes the patient's posture and any joint blockages that could potentially limit the development of the area. This more precise observation enables treatment techniques to be assessed: the use of extra and intravaginal manual therapy (provided the patient has given her consent at the start of the session) and the use of a speculum if required.
Following this assessment, and depending on the patient's problems and objectives, the physiotherapist establishes a treatment protocol and the use or non-use of the intravaginal probe.
Post-delivery treatment or incontinence :
Generally, the first two sessions are carried out lying down, using an adapted intravaginal probe connected to our Phénix Nano software. This allows you to regain awareness of your body and perineum.
The next two sessions are performed in the seated position on the same principle, followed by static and active standing exercises.
The aim is to be able to set up active perineal re-education in the gym (technical platform) over the last few sessions.
Rehabilitation is tailored to the patient's needs, pain, experience and goals. Every patient is different, and every treatment is personalized.
Please note: In order for your basic insurance to cover your sessions, your first session must take place within 5 weeks of your physiotherapy voucher being issued. Moreover, the voucher is no longer valid after 3 months, so your appointments must be made within this period.
