What is maxillofacial physiotherapy?

Maxillofacial physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and functional disorders of the maxillofacial region.

It aims to restore the essential functions of mastication and ventilation, as well as a good balance in the articular and muscular mechanics of the temporomandibular joint, jaw, tongue or face.

Maxillofacial physiotherapists often work in collaboration with dentists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.

What are the benefits of maxillofacial physiotherapy?

Its benefits are multiple and highly significant for patients' quality of life, as it affects an area that involves vital functions such as eating and breathing.

This rehabilitation can be used to treat a wide range of pathologies: muscular or joint pain, traumatic or orthognatic surgery, oncology, lingual dyspraxia in orthodontic settings, peripheral facial paralysis...

How does your physiotherapy treatment work?

The first session is particularly important, as we take stock of all the parameters that can influence the patient's pathology: from the diagnosis established by the doctor, through biomechanical and postural parameters, right up to the patient's psycho-emotional context.

We take the time to clearly explain the problem and educate the patient to adapt his or her daily behavior. Finally, we propose a rehabilitation plan, both at the center and at home.

Maxillofacial physiotherapy interventions can include specific exercises, relaxation techniques, massage, stretching and postural advice to improve function, reduce pain and restore mobility to the jaw and face.

In the case of certain major pathologies (localized cancer of the face and oral cavity), treatment can be long and very regular (sessions of up to 3x/week).

Please note: In order for your basic insurance to cover your sessions, your first session must take place within 5 weeks of your physiotherapy voucher being issued. Moreover, the voucher is no longer valid after 3 months, so your appointments must be made within this period.

What equipment is needed for maxillofacial physiotherapy?

Very little! The therapist's hands and explanations are enough! Explanations are provided using a variety of aids: paper documents, the Internet and a plastic skull. We use gloves for endo-buccal manipulations. In some cases, we also use wooden tongue depressors and a small ruler to measure mobility amplitudes.
